Robinhood AI Trading Agents and Crypto Perps: Full Analysis
By Azness Team ·
Robinhood unveils AI trading agents, 10x crypto perpetual futures, and weekend stock trading at its Houston summit. Here's what it means for everyday investors.
Robinhood used its HOOD Summit in Houston this week to announce Robinhood AI trading agents, crypto perpetual futures with leverage, and weekend stock trading — a bundle that pushes the retail brokerage deeper into territory once reserved for professional desks. The company says the new agent product and perps are "coming soon" to eligible U.S. customers, with perpetuals expected within the coming months.
What Robinhood AI trading agents actually do
Rather than a chatbot that merely replies to questions, an agent is built to act. Robinhood's iteration sits within the main app and is able to investigate markets, put together a strategy, and execute trades around the clock. Customers assign the agent a name, create a separate account for it, and select an AI model from providers such as OpenAI. Use of OpenAI's GPT-Luna model will be free through the end of the year.
Safeguards are important in this context. An agent may only access funds held in its own account, and by default each trade requires customer approval — although users have the option to turn that requirement off. At launch, agents are unable to borrow on margin. A feature known as Loops, which is described as converting a strategy into a standing instruction the agent carries out repeatedly, is likewise on the way soon.
The uptake has been swift. According to Robinhood, over 150,000 users have set up agentic trading accounts starting in May, with those agents hitting Robinhood's tools nearly 30 million times every day. The firm has even begun offering outside data to agents for a fee, sourcing options details from Unusual Whales, market figures from Nasdaq, crypto information from Token Terminal, and government activity monitored by Quiver Quantitative.
Crypto perpetual futures arrive in the US app
For crypto holders, the more significant structural change comes from perpetual futures. These are wagers on crypto prices with no expiry date; at present they change hands largely overseas, with daily volume exceeding $200 billion. Through Bitstamp, the exchange Robinhood bought last year, and also via Robinhood Derivatives, the company will make them available to qualified U.S. customers within its app. Through the end of the year, fees will be 0.01% per trade.
Leverage comes in tiers. Bitcoin and ether receive as much as 10x, whereas SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK and HYPE are limited to 3x. Grace Q, Robinhood's head of U.S. futures products, characterized the reduced limits on the long tail as an intentional decision to begin more safely, even though numerous perps traders seek the highest possible leverage.
Such prudence deserves attention. Perps enable traders to put up margin to control a position many times larger — which amplifies losses just as readily as gains. Liquidations outside regular hours pose a genuine danger when the underlying spot markets are thinner.
Weekend stocks and extended hours
Robinhood additionally introduced weekend trading for U.S. stocks along with extended options hours. A chosen set of stocks and ETFs will be available for trading on Saturdays and Sundays via Bruce ATS. The company's 24 Hour Market, which debuted in 2023, still halts on weekends, so this closes a gap. Earnings contracts through Cboe were also revealed.
This comes amid a wider industry drive. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have submitted filings to extend trading hours, and established brokers including Charles Schwab, Interactive Brokers and Fidelity have broadened their offerings. Crypto's continuous trading is placing pressure on the stock session that runs only on weekdays.
Why it matters
Robinhood currently counts over 27 million funded accounts. CEO Vlad Tenev stated the aim is to establish Robinhood as the top destination for active traders by providing tools that were once the preserve of hedge funds, major banks and quant firms. Abhishek Fatehpuria, VP of product management, added that the focus is on ranking first for active traders across all asset classes, rather than privileging any single one.
Gina Pasqua-Abeles, a senior director of product management, described the agent as an extension — mainly a research tool that can execute — and said the company expects users to keep some oversight. That framing is important: oversight is exactly where risk concentrates when automation runs unattended.
The macroeconomic dimension is subtler yet genuine. Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo, has cautioned that should households permit AI agents to move cash automatically into the highest-yielding accounts, banks might forfeit a substantial portion of the inexpensive deposits they depend on to finance loans. Agentic finance is not merely a brokerage narrative.
Market reaction
Live prices on our exchange show a soft tape. Bitcoin is at $83,315.00, down 0.75% over 24 hours on $27,970,589,490 in volume. Ethereum trades at $2,673.70, down 1.35%. Solana sits at $118.47, down 0.85%, while XRP is at $1.50, down 0.46%. Dogecoin is at $0.093721, down 1.33%.
None of these moves can be tied directly to the Robinhood announcement, and it would be wrong to claim otherwise. But the list is notable: BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP and DOGE are all assets that will eventually be tradeable as perps inside Robinhood's app. Easier leveraged access to those names could, over time, change how retail flow interacts with their order books.
What to watch next
- Launch timing. "Coming soon" for agents and "in the coming months" for perps are vague. Watch for firm dates and state-by-state eligibility.
- Model choices. Sources differ on whether customers pick from multiple labs or specifically OpenAI and Anthropic. The final list affects cost and capability.
- Loops behavior. Standing instructions that repeat without approval are the highest-risk feature. Details on limits and kill switches matter.
- Fee sunset. The 0.01% per-trade rate expires at year-end. What replaces it will shape whether perps stay competitive.
- Competitor response. Charles Schwab, Interactive Brokers and Fidelity have all been expanding. Agentic trading could become a standard brokerage feature rather than a differentiator.
FAQ
What are Robinhood AI trading agents?
These are AI tools embedded in the Robinhood app that are capable of researching markets, constructing strategies and executing trades at any hour. Customers give the agent a name, open a distinct account for it, pick an AI model and establish limits. As a default, every trade requires approval.
Why did Robinhood launch crypto perpetual futures?
Perps constitute a major market, with daily volume surpassing $200 billion, and they are traded predominantly offshore. Robinhood aims to deliver them to qualified U.S. customers via Bitstamp and Robinhood Derivatives, offering as much as 10x leverage on bitcoin and ether and 3x on a number of altcoins.
How much leverage can I get on Robinhood perps?
Bitcoin and ether support up to 10x. SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK and HYPE are capped at 3x. Higher leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and margin positions can be liquidated.
